CHAPTER EIGHT
Brook
The week flew by. We’d been so busy all week at the salon that I hadn’t really had any time in the day to wallow in self-pity. I’d spent the evenings keeping myself busy. I joined a gym, I went swimming and I ate out with either Blake or Henry. But I knew Tanner wasn’t around me. I hadn’t felt him all week and he hadn’t bothered to text me or check up on me. I know it’s what I wanted, I should feel happy but inside I feel empty. Every little hurdle feels like the very first time he broke my heart, the pain just seems to go on and on.
I decided to keep Friday night free so that I could trawl the internet for career idea’s but as I sit in front of my laptop, my intercom buzzes. I’m surprised to hear Cooper’s voice. “Brook, can I come up?”
I let him in, and he follows me to the kitchen. “I didn’t expect you, what’s up?”
“I’m having to put the club on lock down,” he stated, folding his large arms over his wide chest.
“Okay, and you’re telling me because…” I wait for him to finish my sentence.
“You know how this works Brook, you need to come with me.”
I shake my head, laughing nervously. “No, I’m nothing to do with the club these days.”
“I know, unfortunately you’re still seen as part of us. The threat is towards Tanner which means you could be at risk. His dad is causing all kinds of problems and as a precaution I’d like you to stay at the club.”
“No,” I said firmly, “There’s no way I can stay at the club after everything that’s happened. I have a job and responsibilities that don’t just stop because you decide that you want a lockdown.”
“Brook you know I wouldn’t take that decision lightly, if I’m putting us on lockdown then there’s a real threat. Until I can locate Tanner’s dad you aren’t safe. If you don’t come with me willingly then I’ll take you out of here kicking and screaming,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
I knew that it wasn’t an empty threat, he would take me out of here against my will. “For how long?” I sighed.
“Hopefully no longer than the weekend. I’ve spoken to your boss and he was fine about you taking tomorrow. I promised I’d have you in work Monday but if I haven’t found Tanner’s dad then I’ll personally escort you there myself and keep watch.”
“For goodness sake, I thought I’d left all this behind. Will I ever be rid of that man?” I huff.
***
Half an hour later I found myself entering the clubhouse, it felt weird. After not being here for months it felt like my worlds were colliding, past and present crashing together. Woody was the first to spot me, he jumped from his chair and rushed towards me, sweeping me into a bear hug and swinging me around. The problem with my petit size, was that all these huge men automatically lifted me up.
